Walls of the ruin of a 17th century Spanish mission church are highlighted by a massive spiral galaxy.
NASA
=s Hubble Heritage Team used data from two different sightings and three color filters to capture this dusty spiral galaxy. Observations by the HST Key Project set a measurement of 60 light years distance between NGC 4414 and earth. This full color view shows the central area composed of more red and yellow older stars with younger stars of blue in the arms, along with dark patches and streaks of interstellar dust. (HST-NGC4414-9925; PRC 99-25. Also credit W. Freedman, Carnegie Inst. Of Wash., AURA, STScI.))Built in the mid 1600's by Indian labor under the direction of Franciscans, the Quarai settlement was on a road to salt deposits in central New Mexico. It was also part of the Spanish crown
=s pledge to bring Catholicism to the natives. Raiding Apaches, drought and famine took its toll, and Quarai was abandoned before the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.Click on image to return to Quarai.
