Archbishop Lamy's cathedral stands in the haunting light of an aging star (M27) during the Christmas season. Sitting just off the Santa Fe plaza, the site has been occupied by a church since Spanish settlers arrived in 1610. Lamy chose the area as the heart of his bishopric and began building the huge Romanesque cathedral in 1869. His statue, dedicated in 1915, stands to the right. Although its towers were never finished, the cathedral stands today as the foremost architectural and cultural landmark in this famous city.

An aging star sheds its outer layer in knots of glowing gas and dust, forming the Dumbell Nebula, M27. This was the first planetary nebula ever found, discovered by French astronomer Charles Messier in 1764. Knots form when hot ionized gas collides with cooler areas of the nebula.
