Quarai and the Salinas Pueblo Mission Ruins
Located near Mountainair, in central New Mexico, are the ruins of three Spanish settlements founded in the early 1600's.
Quarai, Gran Quivira, and Abo were already Indian pueblos when the Spanish came to this land, but they became important villages along the route to salt deposits for the Spanish Crown. Priests directed the building of massive churches, and natives settled here from many tribes. Drought, famine, and Apache raids led to the abandonment of all these settlements before the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. Today these ruins are part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.
