16th Century New Mexico Franciscan

A mainstay of religious fervor in the New World, Franciscans sailed with Christopher Columbus and accompanied many expeditions into the hinterland to missionize and convert the native populations. This one, with a book of devotional prayers in hand, is pictured in the 1885 edition of William G. Ritch's Illustrated New Mexico, Historical and Industrial. The engraving was done by Miller Engineering Company of Denver.
