B and W Jug

An almost musical scheme of lines and dots decorate this water jug in the Chaco Canyon Museum. Terracotta loops allowed the jug to be hung by a cord on the wall or on a shoulder. The jug is backlit by the light of a massive supernova blazing with the light of 200 million suns. STScI-PRC2004-23: NASA, ESA, A.V. Filippenko (UC-Berkely) and P. Chaco Mesas with Wall

This ruin along the Gallo Wash in Chaco Canyon, NM, gave  ancient Southwest Indian visitors to the religious site a perfect view of Fajada Butte in the distance (far right). The Butte is famous for the discovery of an archaeoastronomy feature, a "light dagger" that falls across the center of a spiral design carved into a rock high on the Butte during the winter and summer solstice. Overhead spreads the Bug Nebula, a dark cloud of gas and dust that veils in mystery one of the brightest known dying stars in the Southern Constellation.
