A Most Remarkable Man

Bartolomé de las Casas became bishop of Chiapa in the early 16th century and had a remarkable career as a historian and defender of natives conquered by the Spanish. Son of a soldier who accompanied Columbus, the Dominican became the first consecrated priest in the New World. His image and story are preserved in Horn and Wallace's 1963 reprint of Ralph Twitchell's 1913 classic book, The Leading Facts of New Mexican History. The reprint is widely available in Albuquerque public libraries and appears here courtesy of Mrs. Calvin Horn and the Lomas Tramway Branch Library.
