The Blue Lady

Miraculous visitations to New Mexico by a blue-clad lady were reported to Father Alonso de Benavides in the 1620's, and were later ascribed to the transmigrations of a mystical Franciscan nun living in Spain. Mother Maria de Jesús de Agreda was a confidante of kings and author of a famous religious book. Woodcut from Benavides' Tanto que se sacó, 1730, courtesy of John Kessell's book, Spain in the Southwest.
